Orthotic Instructions

Advance Tech Orthotics Break In Instructions:

* Place the heel edge of the insert against the heel edge of the shoe. Low dimple side to the outside of shoe. To clean your othotics soak them warm, soapy water. DO NOT expose to extreme heat.

*Remove all existing arches from shoe that may interfere with the proper positioning of the orthotics. This can be done by removing then trimming the shoes insole with scissors removing the arch and or lip at heel area. Re-insert the insole after you have trimmed it flat. The orthotic should fit in the shoe level and all the way to the back of the heel counters of the shoe without obstruction from the insole. Replacing original insole with flat cushion insoles are also acceptable. Our othotics may be worn in heels, western boots and other fashionable footwear by placing the orthotics next to the skin then putting hosiery or socks over the foot and orthotic at the same time. This also helps to prevent slippage and keeps the orthotics in the proper position.

* It is best to BREAK IN ORTHOTICS with a new pair of shoes that have NOT been broken down or stretched out. Proper fitting footwear is essential for the orthotic to work correctly.

* You should begin by wearing the inserts gradually, building up your wearing time daily until you can wear them comfortably all day. If neccessary, you may want to treat the orthotic break in period like a new exercise program. Start yourself on a graduating schedule wearing the orthotics an hour on and an hour off, then 2 hours on , hour off, 4 hours on, hour off, etc.

*It is normal to feel the orthotics slightly more or different in one foot than the other for the first few weeks.  These orthotics also have unique properties where you will feel different  pressure points and may require additional break in time in these areas even if you have already worn orthotics.

* The feeling of walking on a roll of nickels may last as long as 2 weeks. The longer you have been walking on imbalanced feet the more pressure you may feel.

* While wearing the orthotics, if you experience any pain that causes you concern STOP wearing and contact the office. an adjustment may be needed (see adjustment form page).

NONE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS OR TIPS ARE INTENDED TO REPLACE YOUR DOCTORS RECOMMENDATIONS

Plantar Fasciitis: Clients who have this problem can find relief by placing the orthotics in a pair of slippers next ot the bed. Then every morning the first step out of bed is into the orthotics for a few minutes. Try this every day for 30 days then test if morning pain is gone. If pain persits continue another couple weeks. Use this procedure anytime going from an extended, relaxed non-weight bearing to a weight bearing position. DO NOT WALK BARE FOOT!

TIPS: For use of orthotic in sandals or open back footwear; Attach a small 1/2" x 1/2" square of self adhesive Velcro  to the middle rear or middle front of the orthotics ( do not attach directly under heel area or balls of feet area). Stick the hook side of the Velcro on the orthotic and the soft side on the footwear. This helps to prevent the orthotic from slipping.

ADJUSTMENTS: If you feel you need an adjustment after you have read all of the instructions and completed the break in period, call us or click on the "Orthotics Adjustment Form" page and return completed form with both orthotics to our office.

ORTHO COVER INSTRUCTIONS:  Optional Purchase
When installing your covers for the first time they may be quite tight. Slip the cover over the heel of the orthotic first with the seam on the bottom. Then slip the cover over the front of the orthotic. Position the cover so the seam is straight on the bottom and the tear-drop shape is under the forefoot area. After the covers have been stretched the tear-drop can be worn at the heel area if you want to apply Velcro (see tips).  To determine the Rt. from the Lt. orthotic with the cover on, feel along the top surface of the orthotic till you feel the dimple close to the middle edge. Remember the dimple always goes to the outside.
